On the same day of opening a Weibo account in China and grabbing two million followers, Stephen Hawking announced his participation in a $100 million interstellar travel initiative, “Breakthrough Starshot,” launched by Russian venture capitalist Yuri Milner. The plan is to develop a computer chip-sized, light-powered spacecraft, and send it to another star system Alpha Centauri in 20 years. It would take about 30,000 years to travel to the nearest star system, which is 40 trillion kilometers away, based on current technologies.
